Caring for your Myrtle Topiary

WATER
Myrtles love consistency. Keep the soil evenly moist by checking it daily with the back of your fingers—it should feel damp and slightly cool. Want an easy win? A moisture meter takes the guesswork out and helps you stay on track. The dial should never get into the red (dry) zone. Aim for blue (wet) after watering and green (moist) between waterings.

LIGHT
Bright indirect light is key. Place your Myrtle in the sunniest spot in your home, or move it outside once summer rolls in. If it’s been properly acclimated, it’ll thrive in morning sunshine—but try to shield it from direct afternoon rays. Outdoors, you’ll notice it drinks a bit more, so be ready to water more often.

FERTILIZE
From May through August, give your Myrtle a little boost every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Think of it as a seasonal pick-me-up. Here's an organic fertilizer that keep my Myrtles blooming all summer.
TEMPERATURE
Myrtles are not fans of the cold. If temperatures dip below 10°C (50°F), it’s time to bring them indoors where it’s cozy.

TRIM
To keep that lovely topiary shape, trim regularly during the growing season using clean and sharp scissors. I start off with these utility shears and as the topiary ball gets larger, I increase the length of my blade. When tiny buds start to appear, press pause and let the charming white blooms have their moment.

A LITTLE TIP:
Let your new topiary settle into its original pot for a couple of weeks—or until you spot fresh growth. That’s your sign it’s feeling at home and ready for a new pot of it's own. Unglazed terracotta pots work beautifully and develop moss over time from the consistent moisture. Here is my favourite Aged English Planter.
Enjoy!
